Spring Photos: A Modern Woman’s Wit

On Wednesday, March 28, 2018 A Modern Woman’s Wit was on display at the Wesleyan University Davison Art Center. This performance built on themes in the Slovak folktale A Woman’s Wit and was an interactive installation that combined projection, sound, textile, animation, and movement to explore modern feminist connections to historical texts. A Modern Woman’s Wit was a collaboration between costume designer/textile artist and Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater Cybele Moon and media artist Erica Larsen-Dockray.

Spring Photos: Manual Cinema: Ada/Ava

On Friday, February 23, 2018 Performance collective Manual Cinema created live film on stage, combining cinematic techniques, theatricality, handmade shadow puppetry, innovative sound, and live music. The Connecticut premiere of Ada/Ava (2013) used a story of the fantastic and supernatural to explore mourning and melancholy, self and other. Bereaved of her twin sister Ava, septuagenarian Ada solitarily marks time until a traveling carnival and a trip to a mirror maze plunges her into a journey across the thresholds of life and death.

Fall Photos: The Pillowman (2003) by Martin McDonagh

On Thursday, November 16 through Saturday, November 18, 2017 Wesleyan students and alumni presented a production of The Pillowman — set in late 1980s/mid-1990s America under a totalitarian/dictator state. The production features a minimal set design by Emmie Finckel ’14, sound design by Anthony Dean ’17, fight choreography by Sean Chin ’09, and twelve Wesleyan undergraduate students including two separate lead casts with different gendered actors playing the lead roles in alternating performances. Campus hip hop artists also contribute original music narration with rap verses in French and Chinese.

Fall Photos: Ping Chong: All Islands Connect Under Water – A Lecture with Media

On Thursday, September 21, 2017 acclaimed artist addressing issues of inequality, equity, and social justice with beauty and precision, Ping Chong, gave a talk at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. Since 1972, Ping Chong has created over 100 works for the stage which have been presented at major festivals and theaters worldwide. His work explores the intersections of race, culture, history, art, and technology in the modern world.

Fall Photos: Main Street Stroll and MASH

On Saturday, September 9, 2017 A family-friendly celebration of Middletown’s Main Street and the new Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore, the Main Street Stroll featured music, street performers, specialty workshops, free admission at Kidcity Children’s Museum, and much more.
Inspired by Fete de la Musique (also known as World Music Day), the sixth annual The MASH festival highlights Wesleyan’s student music scene, with multiple stages on campus featuring everything from a cappella ensembles to student, faculty, and alumni bands.

On Thursday, April 20, 2017 Actors and Actresses rehearsed for the world premiere of Islands, a play by Professor of Theater Ron Jenkins that explores the legacy of colonialism and the relationship between Indonesia and the United States, commissioned by the Center for the Arts.

Photos from the dress rehearsal of text&beheadings/ElizabethR by visionary director Karin Coonrod on Friday, February 17,  2017 in the CFA Theater. Four actresses from the theater collective Compagnia de’ Colombari offered a fractured portrait of “The Virgin Queen” Elizabeth I of England in a breathless game of hide-and-seek with history, mystery, and the theater form inspired by James Joyce and Gertrude Stein.
